Facts about Flags

We recently had a customer ask us what the world’s largest ever flag was so I decided to collate a list of top ten flag facts!

  1. There is only one country in the world whose flag is not quadrilateral – this is the Nepalese flag. The two stacked triangular flag represents the Himalaya Mountains in Nepal.
  2. The first ever Olympic flag went missing for 77 years after the 1920 games in Belgium, until a 1920 olympian revealed he’d had it in his suitcase the whole time, after being dared to climb the flag pole and steal it!
  3.  There was one surviving Union Jack flag from the Battle of Trafalgar and it sold for £384,000 on 21st October 2009!
  4. There are only two countries with squared flags, Switzerland and Vatican City.
  5. There are thirteen stripes on the American flag that represent the thirteen British colonies that declared independence from Kingdom of Great Britain
  6. The Danish flag is the oldest flag, designed in 1219!
  7. From 1815 to 1830, the French flag was plain white during the Bourbon Restoration
  8. The largest flagpole in the world, is the Jeddah flag pole in  Saudi Arabia. The flagpole measures 170 metres!
  9. The most common symbol on a flag is the sun
  10. The largest flag flown from a flag pole was a Mexican national flag measuring 34.3m x 60m (112ft 6.39in x 196ft 10.2in) and was achieved by the city of Piedras Negras (Mexico), in Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico, on 2 December 2011. The flag pole measures 100 m (328ft 1in).
